Create Your Own Club Want to bond with your friends over books-and have fun at the same time? Create your own book club! Here, four simple steps on how to get started. Step 1: Talk to your friends about the "5 W's" - Who, What, When, Where and Why? Who do you want to be in your book club? What kind of books will you read?When-and how often-will you meet? Where will you hold the meetings (i.e., in your bedroom, basement or living room)? Why do you want to start a book club? Step 2: Spread the Word After you discuss the "5 W's," it's time to get the word out. But how do you get everyone together? You could make phone calls, start a phone chain, or design fliers and hang them in your favorite stores around the mall or in your local school or library. How about placing an ad in your school newspaper or bulletin? Or send out a mass e-mail. Step 3: Kick-Off Meeting First meetings are always exciting and fun. Some books have discussion questions located right in the back of the book that can jump-start conversations. If there's a lull, just fall back on the five basic discussion-starters: Author, Setting, Plot, Character and Themes. Step 4: Spice Up Your Meetings To up the fun factor, give each meeting a theme. Here is a list of ideas: Food theme: Where is the setting of your book? Does it inspire something culinary? For example, if your book takes place in London, you could provide high tea and scones as a snack. Costume theme: Does your book take place in a different decade or era? Have your friends dress up as characters in the book you're reading. Movie theme: If your group has read a book that has been adapted to a movie or play, it might be fun to rent the movie or attend the play. Comparing the book to the performance always makes for interesting and lively conversations.
