NEW YORK — The featherweight, filthy rich twin tycoons are known to teeter on city streets accessorized with oversized sunglasses, fur coats and Starbucks coffee cups.
They are among the most influential women in fashion.
At 22, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen co-own a global branding empire, and have separately dated movie stars, a Greek shipping heir and Lance Armstrong.
Mary-Kate made headlines with her past rehab stint for an eating disorder and her involvement in the tragic death of close friend Heath Ledger. Inexplicably, the masseuse who found the actor's lifeless body phoned Mary-Kate three times before dialing 911.
Despite their uncommon lives, Mary-Kate insists, "We're like everyone else."
She delivered that colossal understatement while sitting next to fraternal twin Ashley on Oprah Winfrey's TV studio sofa, where the sisters - whose casually glamorous style has become iconic enough to mimic on Halloween - promoted their new coffee table book, "Influence," a tribute to the artists, designers and other creative people who have inspired them.
"I think we work hard every single day," said Mary-Kate, who complained that the paparazzi only seem to take street shots of her holding cups of coffee, inviting the notion of a trust fund and a leisure lifestyle.
But it's that thrown-together yet carefully curated look that has established the twins as among the most daring women in fashion. Admired by designers from Michael Kors to Diane Von Furstenberg, the attention to their personal style has doubtless helped in expanding their brand into two rising fashion labels, The Row and Elizabeth and James.
And now there's "Influence." The book features their interviews with Von Furstenberg, Karl Lagerfeld, Francisco Costa, Richard Prince and Lauren Hutton. The sisters also devote pages to each other in a scrapbook-style photo spread and a Proust questionnaire, in which Mary-Kate reveals the thing she most dislikes, the media. Ashley, the more conservative of the two, considers social awkwardness to be her principal defect.
Chanel designer Lagerfeld, who is unintentionally hilarious, tells the five-foot, one-inch sisters in his Q&A that he thought they were shorter. "Not that it matters. What you need is a face. If you have a face you don't need height or a voice," he says.
Von Furstenberg, who started a fashion craze with her signature wrap dress, says she morphed into a brand before she knew it, aiming to be "a woman who didn't need for the man to decide."
Joking about her early life in Manhattan, quirky former model and actress Hutton says, "One of my goddaughters says I invented online dating. It was like that, except it wasn't on a computer. You talk to someone for a few minutes and then blow 'em off."
The Olsens declined to be interviewed by The Associated Press about their book.
"I hope (the book) influences everyone, any age, to do something that you're passionate about," Ashley said on Winfrey's show.
Mary-Kate and Ashley have been working since they were babies, debuting at nine months old in the dual role of Michelle Tanner on the ABC sitcom "Full House." They parlayed their celebrity into a reportedly billion-dollar international brand, marketing clothing, furniture and other merchandise to the tween set.
At 18, the twins - then freshmen at New York University - bought out the shareholders and seized control of their company, Dualstar Entertainment Group, crowning Diane Reichenberger as CEO. Meanwhile, they were setting off the bohemian-chic trend, swaddled in layers of ragtag clothing and accessories, winding up on "worst dressed" lists.
"Over time, their style has become a lot more refined," says Hope Greenberg, fashion director at Lucky magazine. Their look is "very chic, urban, street, expensive, but still cool. They're always cool. They're unfailingly cool."
Ashley, a serious businesswoman, launched The Row in 2006. It's an upscale line of neutral, tailored pieces sold at department stores including Barneys New York, which presents it beside collections by acclaimed designers Thakoon and Proenza Schouler. Sample price for a black T-shirt: US$210.
The sisters co-design Elizabeth and James, named after their older brother and younger sister. Introduced in 2007, it echoes Mary-Kate's hipster esthetic: tomboy blazers, plaid button-downs, an oversized sweat shirt.
"They are influencing fashion in a big way at the moment; they introduced kind of this masculine-feminine kind of way of dressing," says Stephanie Solomon, fashion director at Bloomingdale's, which carries Elizabeth and James.
Solomon says she was surprised by the quality and innovation of the designs, as well as the heavy involvement of the sisters, who insisted on helping to decorate their window display at the flagship store in Manhattan.
"It would sell even if they were unknown," she says of the line. "Selling pretty well is an understatement - it is one of our best-selling lines right now in our contemporary area."
They don't use their image on the brands' logos and various promotional materials.
But who needs to if you have influence?

I think the only reason why Im thinking for char to do series is coz I see her movies as how to say it.. below average, bit dissapointing..partly to blame is the quality of hk movies lik she is just filming one after the other it is not boosting her fame much... I just hope tat these upcoming ones r better, even being the lead she should get more screen time I hope

But in reality we know she has all these other projects to do that its hard to believe that she can actually put the time into filming a series. Tats wat I thought, if she was to do a series although it would be nice to see her in a TVB idol series, in truth fact is tat they are dieing out eg Nikki and Kevin those little ones r overshadowed by the big productions big family dramas, so it would seem to me waste of time to do, however if Char was to participate in a series mainland or Taiwan even guest star or support role that would be much more anticipating.

Same with the movies, crossover of Taiwan idols into hong kong movies and the other way round. Even if more movies to come, I want to see her expand into the horizon with roles where she can indeed mingle with other big movie stars already. Did someone mention she in the running for that Chinese paladin3 mainland series…man tat would be plain awesome…anything beyond hong kong she should be aiming for now…she is in my eyes the most talented popular idol in hk solo and in a group lolz.

So small screen and big screen… if you’re known for movies and not series tats above par already… but its great to see her movies and doing smaller tv roles as well..but I do believe for her to be more well known in mainland and Taiwan would be through those little small acting roles wateva!

I haven’t seen many of the older TVB series, I know I should really sit down and pick up all the classic ones for summer break… Ray and Vincy?? Wat a odd match..should b char. Kenny and Char wow high skool love again..kool Yea I really liked chars reality series her first one it was really fun!

Actually another way round it, if Twins did stick together for 10years tat would be sooo kool, then decide, then they can sorta take a break and focus on their own solo careers if they really wanted too! It would be very interesting to see how it all flows coz just having tat 10years how much now already goin on 8 years? So not long to go… if they can hit 10years tat would prove there maturity and success and from there fame can come easily from all over… very interesting to see wat they announce next… I hope they can get out a more mature sophisticated image…tat would be really fabulous to see… awaiting a big comeback.

Livi, some very interesting insights you've mentioned there! TVB idol series, that would more suit Char yes because I know they have these types in taiwan and korea not sure about TVB as TVB is known for having big family dramas coz tat is wat hon kong ppl r into. coz idol drama for TVB can only reach limited viewers probably teens most likely. However I do agree if she can make an idol series tat would be her breakthru rite there... and from there she can go into taiwan and mainland easy...I don't like how they dub voice mando but if she starts in hong kong in a drama series tat would be the start of other things and from there can easily star or guest star in taiwan idol series!! tat would be soo kool. As we already know she is really time deprived in filming drama. I see wat you mean although char would totally go great by starring in a TVB idol drama series it just wouldn't appear at large, as in only reach hong kong viewers. Besides there would be so much disruption with the other twins activities commencing again.

Tats why its really hard for Char, coz she ain't a solo artist, but latelty Ive come to believe tat she is and can handle it and tat she would be ON HER WAY to starring in an idol drama series or wateva. but just coz she has this twins attached to her name she is only still known by tat in other asian countries. Its gonna take a much longer time to land a TVB idol drama series now, coz twins activities come first.

I seriously believe if Char can start any drama series big or small… she would just be going places really… She is already tops in other areas acting…can really be her lead…it just needs to come out in a drama series… in my opinion anywayz. TVB seems to be supporting her… she is involved in many TVB activities and sponsored by TVB stuff and remember tat 10 episode short drama where she appeared in only the first episode, if only she would have landed another role or even a guest star in a TVB drama series tat would be really great! She has hosted tvb segments or not? Did tat stage performance act with Kenny, has her own reality tv series!! Gahhhh she one step away!!~ I can’t stress enough she has soo much potential as demonstrated how she can really be soo attached in Twins to prove tat in such a short time become like a solo artist handling her career just fine!

Now about those guy pairings… yes I reckon they r all must tries.. except mayb nic tse kinda ova seeing him wif char.. don’t hate me guys!! Just wanna see char fresh with more different ppl who can leverage fame for char as well like a win win situation and tat is how the rumour couples come about!!~ haha . don’t know why just I do reckon u see urself just like ur idol, Charlene coz u relate so much to her personally tat u also do the same for the guys u really like most lol .

OMG YES no I haven’t heard bout TVB mix with mainland actors, I think tat is probably more of the ancient or older series BUT now u mention it, char would be excellent for a role very similar!~ she can do tat in a Taiwan drama or mainland, coz she from hong kong can get mixed in…see how in so many ways it can work out its just tat she is stuck and binding to the name TWINS.

Sorry guys wrote excessively heaps heaps heaps, sorta makes up for not being in this thread for a while hay! But please share ur thoughts on this as well… I like this topic discussion… like were Chars secret cyberspace agents planning char’s next 5 years or something ahah who knows we can probably predict it like we did on her fashion hey??!~ lolz.
