"You lose the fun of having an adventure, because it becomes a need for a quick high rather than a playful interaction with your world." The other pitfall? "When you act irresponsibly in the moment, you can jeopardize yourself and your relationships."
So next time you're faced with a tempting offer, try a little experiment. First, think only about the fast, fun, instant gratification you'll get from, say, blowing off work for a vacay or always being the first to tell a guy you're head over heels in love.
Then ask yourself, "What good things would happen to me if I didn't do this?" For example, if you hold back to get a better sense of where he stands, it'll be all the more gratifying to share your feelings. And if you shelve your spur-of-the-moment road trip, you'll be in better standing for a promotion, which has more exciting perks down the line. "If the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term ones, reconsider doing it, or at least bring it down a notch or two," says Rosenbach.
